I never really was the person that was โI want to flyโ but my stepson is a flight instructor and I went out with him and he let me fly a Cherokee Piper. Sitting in that left seat for the first time was overwhelming, but exciting. I now want to learn how to fly after this experience. First day being in a Cherokee Piper I was scared shitlessโฆ The day after I was like that was cool. My stepson took me up again and guided me as I flew. Now I canโt get enough. I have greater respect for my stepson and flying. Thanks for this tip!! Maybe one day I will do it on my own.

This is great advice not only to save money but improve proficiency and safety for all pilots at every level. Recently watched the Blue Angels documentary. Arguably some of the best pilots in the world use visualization techniques. If itโs good enough for them itโs good enough for us weekend warriors. And get the ground school app! I take it with me everywhere.
Back in 1982, I got my private pilot's certificate in 47 hours. Looking back I was motivated and prepared. I flew 2-3 times a week, so I didn't have to relearn much. I could have done it in less, but I wasted a lot of solo time just messing around having fun. Same thing applied as I worked on Instrument, Commercial, CFI and CFII. Even doing ASES i studied before getting in the plane.

The flights I considered a job were those where the student came in without having read anything about the lesson of that day.
I'm amazed at how often and firmly I recommend this to students…and they don't seem to listen. Those students that DO take it to heart and memorize these procedures, chair fly, and PREPARE for lessons…they progress SOOOO much quicker and BETTER.
I spent hours in the cockpit preparing for my first helicopter flight in almost 5 years. I felt a little weird running through an imaginary flight, over and over while students, mechanics and instructors wandered through the hanger but I had a great check ride.
Some flight instructors say don't record your flight lessons, but I disagree…what happens if you get a new flight instructor now you have to prove yourself all over again and that can cost alot…if you do record your new flight instructor can get a sense of how the student performs…here are some other tips:Use a ground power unit While on the ground in order to program the GPS ect…the hourly price ratio between a GPU and an aircraft engine is a big difference…2nd combine your flight lessons maybe up to 2/12 lessons in one setting 3rd use second hand pilot supplies BONUS: if looking for a handheld air band radio look on the used market sometimes mislabeled as "CB radios"and do your home work. Maybe get into study groups using gotomeeting or skype and study with other aviation peers.

These days, schedule the examiner first to avoid the 8+ month wait. Then knock out the training. Otherwise, you better have one hell of a bank account.

recently "give me a couple minutes…meanwhile you research the new to you airport"….in flight "ok you good?" (ya ya) "ok what is pattern altitude, what are the runways, what are the freqs, etc" (uhh)…."I have controls here is my ipad figure it out"……..that was a test next time I will quiz on ground saying remember that flight…

This informationr is huge. My commercial checkride is in a few weeks and I know the feeling of finishing an instruction flight not prepared. The 4 or 5 times I wasnโt prepared I felt like I let myself and instructor down and wasted a bunch of time and $$$$$.
