GST rate should have slabs according to the price of goods or services similar to the income tax slabs

This is completely wrong btw and NOT how GST works.

For goods that involve multiple manufacturing steps like refrigerators or cars, with the end product being produced after integration with several supply chains, the GST rate is kept higher in order to be able to recoup the GST paid on the individual steps & sourcing of components via ITC (input tax credit) by the end manufacturer/business.

Thus, the actual tax rate is NOT 28% but rather that defines the maximum applicable rate which is then net off by ITC across various steps along the chain.

It has nothing to do with "luxury".

Whereas, sale of fruits or simple goods such as flour just involves a refiner and a transporter and not multiple manufacured components.

Time to put AC and automobile parts out of the luxury goods segment.
28% on AC in a hot country like India is a crime. AC is a necessity even for the lower middle class because their productivity and health goes down in bad hot weather.
Without a lower middle class, our society can't function. Time to show some kindness toward them by making ACs cheaper and accessible for small houses.

Washing machine was shown among luxury goods? But is it a luxury even though many can't afford it? Imagine travelling for 3 hours to and fro from work and then spending 8-10 hours in office and having to wash clothes manually.

Thing is greed of bureaucracy and GST council will never allow it to rationalize. They have time to categorize popcorns and put different GST rates but no time for decision on lowering GST on health and term insurances.

Also, when they proposed GST they said its going to be one nation one tax. Then they introduced CESS (tax on tax) and god knows what else is coming to haunt us. Petrol, Diesel is still not under GST and BJP has majority in GST counsil.

The caramel popcorn is not taxed extra because it is a luxury item, it is to disincentivize sugar… All sugar laden are taxed at 18% hence the GST council decided to apply the same to caramel popcorn. It is more like a sin tax not a luxury tax.

Progressivity lani thi then why you removed VAT. You are basically changing the definition of GST itself..which is to simply by deriving one Tax rate. In a way this progressivity is actually Gur ka Gobar like once PM said we are very good at making it…please don't try to justify wrong…
