The cherry on top is they generally force you to spend more than the gift card's worth. If you have a $100 gift card, you're likely not going to get exactly $100 worth of stuff. You'll probably come in and spend a bit more than that to use the full card.
Ok but no one is saying "invent bad social construct evil money systems so to then talk about them openly on yt channel BUT THEN get me to subscribe because of a slight relief of my oceans of hatred being at least acknowledged" ..invention
I mean the concept is sound because the intent of a gift card is "treat yourself God damn it". But in reality it's a waste of money. I'm surprised you don't see pre-purchase rebate cards. I bet they'd be a hit. Say you can buy a card that entitles you to a rebate for that money in 30 days. If generous it's a range of days. There's tons of genuine benefits to this. The business gets a schedule to plan for, especially if they can account for your history. You get the discount. They get to rip off people who lose their cards.
Now extrapolate that and you've got discounts for people who schedule their grocery trips and spending amounts. And people pay premiums for being impulsive buyers… Oh it all fell apart right there.
Gift cards arent always a scam. Its a way to give someone a nudge toward spending money on themselves, rather than saving and worrying about every penny.
I was expecting something like " We need more money, but don't have time to move product. How do we get people to give us their money with nothing in return."
Gift cards are from gift certificates, which is a very old concept. Just was a piece of paper that stores sold individually. Like $25 off your next meal at the local steakhouse. People put them in cards. It was common in the 80's/90's and probably much earlier.

Not to mention all the scammers that use gift cards as untraceable cash
Speaking of pen – is that a Leuchtturm 1917 Drehgriffel Nr. 1? Beautiful pen and beautiful writing mate.
My wife pushed back thay gift cards allow her to give herself permission to make a purchase that she otherwise wouldn't make. I told her:
Then you are a sucker.
That mentality is EXACTLY what businesses want you to feel.
Because they know the stats on gift cards.
And they know that a nontrival percentage of gift cards purchased will never be used. Literally it's paying for nothing.
The profit margin on a gift card that's not redeemed is infinity. Way better than the profit margin on any product you could dream of selling.
Companies know this, and that is why they push gift cards so strongly.
Gift cards are a massive scam that has been made socially acceptable.
Gift card, stupidestest thing ever!

Note to self: Never buy gift cards.
There…
Nice idea, Halberstram. Now you can focus on the Branson account

Not only that, it's very unlikely that you'll ever spend every penny on the gift card, which is still a profit to the shop
I have 2 expired kaufland gift cards and i hate it.
